Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi Poetry

Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi Balkhi was a 13th century Muslim Sufi saint. After so many centuries his message of Love is being rediscovered and spread by people around the world. Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi Balkhi or as commonly known as Rumi has written a few books among them is his famous Masnavi in Persian language.

His main theme in his books are Love of Allah (god), which made him love humanity, nature and everything good. In his burning in the flame of love he has written many poems and couplets. The Love of Allah was ignited in his heart by his spiritual teacher (Murshid/ Shaikh) Shams e Tabrizi who took Rumi as his only student(seeker/salik) throughout his life.

To this day Rumi’s spiritual tradition continues known as Mevlavi Spiritual Order of Islamic Sufism( similar to Naqshbandia, Qadriya, Chistia, Soharwardia, Naqshbandiah Owaisiah spiritual orders), they are also known as whirling dervishes. Rumi’s message is of Love, which people need the most in these days. There is great wisdom in his poetry and his message of Love is for all.

Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi, the 13th century mystic poet, was truly one of the most passionate and profound poets in history. Now, today his presence still remains strong, due in part to how his words seem to drip of the divine, and startle a profound remembrance that links all back to the Soul-Essence.

Silence of Love

I choose to love you in silence,

For in silence I find no rejection.

I choose to love you in loneliness,

For in loneliness no one owns you but me.

I choose adore you from a distance,

For distance will shield me from pain.

I choose to kiss you in the Wind, for the wind is gentler then my lips.

I choose to hold you in my dreams,

For in my dreams you have no end.

In Silence

A guide has entered this life in silence.

His message is only heard in silence.

Take a sip of his precious wine

And lose yourself.

Don’t insult the greatness of his love,

For he helps all those who suffer, in silence.

Polish the mirror between the breaths.

Go with him, beyond words.

He knows your every deed.

He is the one

who moves the wheel of heaven, in silence.

Every thought is buried in your heart;

He will reveal them one by one, in silence.

Turn each of your thoughts into a bird

And let them fly to the other world.

One is an owl, one is a falcon, one is a crow.

Each one is different from the others

But they are all the same in silence.

To see the Moon that cannot be seen

Turn your eyes inward

and look at yourself, in silence.

In this world and the next,

Don’t talk about this and that;

Let him show you everything,

shining as one . . . in silence.

The Eternal Ecstasy

You are the comfort of my soul in the season of sorrow.

You are the wealth of my spirit in the heartbreak of loss.

The unimaginable, The unknowable—

That is what you give my soul when it moves in your direction.

By your grace my eyes have looked upon eternity.

O King, how could this crumbling empire ever take me from you?

The voice that sings your name

is sweeter than midnight sleep more graceful than the song of a royal poet.

When deep in prayer my faith is bound by the thought of you, not the seven verses of faith.

You greet sinners with mercy,

You melt stone hearts with love.

If I were offered a kingdom,

And the world’s riches were placed at my feet,

I would bow with my face low and say,

This does not compare to His love!

Union is the pure wine.

My life is the cup.

Without your wine what use is this cup?

I once had a thousand desires,

But in my one desire to know you all else melted away.

The pure essence of your being has taken over my heart and soul.

Now there is no second or third, only the sound of your sweet cry.

Through your grace I have found a treasure within myself.

I have found the truth of the Unseen world.

I have come upon the eternal ecstasy.

I have gone beyond the ravages of time.

I have become one with you!

Now my heart sings, “I am the soul of the world.”

From my first breath I have longed for Him—

This longing has become my life.

This longing has seen me grow old. . . .

But one mention of Shams-e Tabriz and all my youth comes back to me.

The One

I am tired of the crying

Of these complaining people.

I want to hear the roars and yells

Of the drunk.

I sing better than nightingales,

But my mouth is sealed

Because of everybody’s envy.

Yet I want to scream.

The master was running around town

With a candle, saying,

“I am tired of camels and giants.

I want to see a man.”

They answered,

“We looked, But couldn’t find him.”

He said, “The One you couldn’t find

Is the One I want.”

Lose yourself

Lose yourself,

Lose yourself in this love.

When you lose yourself in this love,

you will find everything.

Lose yourself,

Lose yourself.

Do not fear this loss,

For you will rise from the earth and embrace the endless heavens.

Lose yourself, Lose yourself.

Escape from this earthly form,

For this body is a chain and you are its prisoner.

Smash through the prison wall and walk outside with the kings and princes.

Lose yourself, Lose yourself at the foot of the glorious King.

When you lose yourself before the King you will become the King.

Lose yourself, Lose yourself.

Escape from the black cloud that surrounds you.

Then you will see your own light as radiant as the full moon.

Now enter that silence. This is the surest way to lose yourself. . . .

What is your life about, anyway?—

Nothing but a struggle to be someone,

Nothing but a running from your own silence.

I am and I am not

I am drenched in the flood

which has yet to come I’m tied up in the prison which has yet to exist

Not having played the game of chess

I am already the checkmate

Not having tasted a single cup of your wine

I am already drunk

Not having entered the battlefield

I am already wounded and slain I no longer know the difference between image and reality

Like the shadow I am and I am not

Didn’t I tell you

Didn’t I tell you

Do not leave me

for I am your only Friend,

I am the spring of life.

Even if you leave for thousands of years

You will come back to me

for I am your goal and your end.

Didn’t I tell you

not to be seduced by this colorful world for I am the Ultimate Painter.

Didn’t I tell you

you are a fish do not go to dry land

for I am the deep Sea.

Didn’t I tell you

not to fall in the net like birds

for I am your wings and the power of light.

Didn’t I tell you

not to let them change your mind and turn you to ice

for I am your fire and warmth.

Didn’t I tell you they will corrupt you and make you forget that

I am the Spring of all virtues.

Didn’t I tell you not to question my actions for everything falls into order,

I am the Creator.

Didn’t I tell you

your heart can guide you home

because it knows that I am your Master.

We can see the truth in your eyes

For ages you have come and gone courting this delusion.

For ages you have run from the pain and forfeited the ecstasy.

So come, return to the root of the root of your own soul.

Although you appear in earthly form Your essence is pure Consciousness.

You are the fearless guardian of Divine Light.

So come, return to the root of the root of your own soul.

When you lose all sense of self the bonds of a thousand chains will vanish.

Lose yourself completely, Return to the root of the root of your own soul.

You descended from Adam, by the pure Word of God,

but you turned your sight to the empty show of this world.

How can you be satisfied with so little?

So come, return to the root of the root of your own soul.

Why are you so enchanted by this world when a mine of gold lies within you?

Open your eyes and come— Return to the root of the root of your own soul.

You were born from the rays of God’s Majesty when the stars were in their perfect place.

How long will you suffer from the blows of a nonexistent hand?

So come, return to the root of the root of your own soul.

You are a ruby encased in granite.

How long will you deceive Us with this outer show?

O friend, We can see the truth in your eyes!

So come, return to the root of the root of your own soul.

After one moment with that glorious Friend you became loving, radiant, and ecstatic.

Your eyes were sweet and full of fire.

Come, return to the root of the root of your own soul.

Shams-e Tabriz, the King of the Tavern, has handed you an eternal cup,

And God in all His glory is pouring the wine.

So come! Drink! Return to the root of the root of your own soul.

Soul of all souls, life of all life—you are That.

Seen and unseen, moving and unmoving—you are That.

The road that leads to the City is endless;

Go without head or feet and you’ll already be there.

What else could you be?—you are That.

Before life

I wasn’t like this before.

I wasn’t out of my mind and senses.

Once I used to be wise like you,

Not crazy. insane and broken down

Like I am now. I wasn’t the admirer of life

Which has no trace, no being.

I used to ask, “Who is this? What is that?.

” And search all the time.

Since you have wisdom,

Sit and think

That probably I was like this before.

I haven’t changed much.

I used to try to make Myself better than everybody.

I hadn’t been hunted With the ever-growing Love before.

I tried to rise above the sky With my ambition

Yet I didn’t know I was just wandering in the desert.

At the end, I have raised A treasure from the ground.

Fallen from the roof

You that give new life to this planet, you that transcend logic, come.

I am only an arrow. Fill your bow with me and let fly.

Because of this love for you my bowl has fallen from the roof.

Put down a ladder and collect the pieces, please.

People ask, But which roof is your roof?

I answer, Wherever the soul came from and wherever it goes at night, my roof is in that direction. From wherever spring arrives to heal the ground, from wherever searching rises in a human being. The looking itself is a trace of what we are looking for.

But we have been more like the man who sits on his donkey and asks the donkey where to go.

Be quiet now and wait. It may be that the ocean one, the one we desire so to move into and become, desires us out here on land a little longer, going our sundry roads to the shore.

There’s Nothing Ahead

Lovers think they’re looking for each other, but there’s only one search,

wandering this world is wandering that, both inside one transparent sky.

In here there is no dogma and no heresy. The miracle of Jesus is himself, not what he said or did about the future.

Forget the future.

I’d worship someone who could do that.

On the way you may want to look back, or not.

But if you can say,

There’s nothing ahead, there will be nothing there.

Stretch your arms and take hold of the cloth of your clothes with both hands.

The cure for pain is in the pain.

Good and bad are mixed.

If you don’t have both, you don’t belong with us.

When one of us gets lost, is not here, he must be inside us.

There’s no place like that anywhere in the world.

The Alchemy of Love

You come to us from another world

From beyond the stars and void of space.

Transcendent, Pure, Of unimaginable beauty,

Bringing with you the essence of love

You transform all who are touched by you.

Mundane concerns, troubles, and sorrows dissolve in your presence,

Bringing joy to ruler and ruled

To peasant and king

You bewilder us with your grace.

All evils transform into goodness.

You are the master alchemist.

You light the fire of love in earth and sky in heart and soul of every being.

Through your loving existence and nonexistence merge.

All opposites unite.

All that is profane becomes sacred again
